Summer Youth Fitness Camp PDF Print E-mail
ImageEast Texas Medical Center is running two fitness camps this summer just for kids ages 8-17 that will emphasize exercise, nutrition, and healthy living.
Kids In Motion: Is our "mini camp" for 8-12 year olds. The kids will meet with us from 8-12, for one week. (We have three sessions open for the summer.) During the week we will introduce yoga, pilates, group exercise and self defense to the children. One day we will go to a ropes challenge course, and for a treat on Wednesday we have aloted time for the kids to play Nintendo's Wii Fit for a little bit, and we will close the week with some swimming. Everyday there will be a nutrition educational lesson, and healthy snacks.

Teens In Motion: This program is designed for 13-17 year olds. We have formerly called this program "The Edge", but wanted to change the name so it didn't take on such a competitive approach. For this age group we are really focusing on developing a regular exercise habbit, so the  teens will be meeting with us three days a week for six weeks. We will do fitness assessments at the beginning and end of the program to track progress and encourage them to compete with themself instead of others. These participants will take on a more traditional approach to exercise and use the Olympic Center's cardio and strength training equipment. (All of the participants will be intructed by degreed and/or certified exercise specialist.) We also have some field trips to a park planned to teach outdoor games. At the end of the program, we hope the teens have learned the importance of being active, and understand how a fitness program can work into their everyday schedule.
